The Notaries Society has prepared a leaflet about the profession which we hope will be of interest.

The Registrar of the Faculty Office oversees the training and qualification of notaries, has the responsibility for issuing the faculty and the annual practising certificate which, together, enable them to practise. Part of its responsibilities is the governance of the notaries. The Faculty Office is the administrative body of which the Master of the Faculties is head. The majority of Notaries Public also practise as solicitors but the Scrivener Notaries do not, nor do some 150 of the general notaries. A notary or a notary public is a person, usually a lawyer, who has legal authority to witness the signing of documents in order to make them legally valid. 2 In certain states, notaries can set their own fees. 1 Standard notary costs range from 0.25 to 20 and are billed on a per-signature or per-person basis. State law usually sets the highest charges allowed, and notaries can charge any amount up to that limit. They are also authorised to conduct general legal practice (excluding the conduct of court proceedings) such as conveyancing and probate. They may exercise the powers of a Commissioner for Oaths. Notary fees often depend on where you get papers notarized. Notaries are primarily concerned with the authentication and certification of signatures, authority and capacity relating to documents for use abroad. Notaries have to renew their practising certificates every year and can only do so if they have complied with the rules. They must keep clients' money separately from their own and comply with stringent practice rules and rules relating to conduct and discipline. The notary public is there to ensure the validity of the signature and guarantee that the signature was applied voluntarily and without coercion. In order to be admissible, affidavits must be notarized by a notary public. They must be fully insured and maintain fidelity cover for the protection of their clients and the public. An affiant is someone who files an affidavit, which is a written statement used as evidence in court. The rules which affect Notaries are very similar to the rules which affect Solicitors. Notaries are appointed by the Court of Faculties of the Archbishop of Canterbury and are subject to regulation by the Master of the Faculties. law specialized us / no.t.i / uk / n.t r.
